good spot for backpackers, but I would just stay in the dorm then opt for the more expensive private rooms that are just dorm beds in a small room. Staff are really nice and can help you out.
The dorm was freshly painted, so I got upgraded to a private room. Only stayed 1 night. It’s a big house, big living room. Tap water to drink, moody kettle and free breakfast. Looked pretty clean. The light in the hot shower didn’t work. 2 or 3 dogs outside as protection. One cat. It’s walking distance to the bus station and supermarkets. Apparently there was a big garden, but it was raining all day. Susie was very friendly when I arrived. When I came back from my hike next day, she was in a really bad mood and I felt a bit attacked by her (passive aggressive).
Suzie was a helpful host who helped us arrange a good-value taxi. Bedroom door was difficult to shut and not noise-proof due to slatted boards. It also did not lock, requiring us to use our own padlock. Electricity cut out a few times but not for long and at no fault of Colonial Lodge. Thank you.
Our expectations were a bit high considering the description and cost of our family room we booked. Looking into the reviews afterwards, I learned the lodging is geared towards backpacker/hostel type accommodation, cold showers and all.. I would agree it is probably on the fancy end of hostel type accommodations. Just not the traditional B&B we were expecting.
“Social place. ”
Pretty close to downtown. A homey place. Helpful, the British guy who worked as a intern there was very helpful.
