In February 2026, Maui’s Planning Commission voted against creating new hotel zones that would have let thousands of short-term rentals (STRs) keep operating. This followed December 2025’s Bill 9, which set out a sweeping plan: roughly 7,000 vacation rentals in apartment-zoned areas must close shop over five years.
