Gandharva Mahavidyalaya

Gandharva Mahavidyalaya of New Delhi was instituted in the year 1939. The aim behind establishing this institution is to promote the art and culture in form of dance and music. First institute in the series of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya was set up in year 1901 in year in Lahore in memories of pundit Vishnu Digamber Paluskar, who was a famous reviver of classical Hindustani music. This school was shifted to Mumbai after the partition of India in 1947.

This school is the oldest music school of India and its recognition is regarded highly in the musical industry. Madhupam Mudgal, famous Hindustani classical singer, now head the Delhi institute  and  it offers various courses in field of vocal Hindustani music, instrumental music like sitar, bansuri(Bamboo flute), tabla, violin etc and Indian classical dances like Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi. With passage of time this Mahavidyalaya has got hold in the music teaching and now more than 1200 institutes are affiliated to it and exam of its courses are held at more than 800 centers.

Annual festival in memories of the founder of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is celebrated annually. The Vishnu Digamber Festival is one of the most renowned music festivals of classical music specially the Hindustani music. Many musicians from across the country perform in this festival. Dance shows of some famous dancers are also held on this festival and an august audience is present on the occasion. This festival brings together all the big names in Hindustani music on a common platform which in turn helps in promoting the music form.
